The SAT/ACT Series

When your dreams include finding the angle of a triangle or determining which word (imperious, suffering, excitable, resourceful, or precocious) is the right word to complete a sentence, you know the SAT or ACT is approaching!  Which test are you taking?  Which test should you be taking?  Well, in this 4-part series we’ll cover:

Part 1: Why should you take the SAT or the ACT?

Every High School differs on how they reflect a student’s performance based on numerous factors:

  • Level of difficulty of the classes/school
  • Curriculum varies between schools
  • Grade inflation
  • Quality of teaching

 By incorporating standardized tests in their evaluations, admissions officers are better able to judge each student fairly.  It also helps those students who have a good GPA to be ranked on a level playing field with those that have artificially high GPAs. 

These tests determine how well you have understood the information that has been taught to you, how well you grasped concepts, and how well you were able to apply what you learned.  By testing your knowledge of the information you were taught, these test are a reliable predictor of your academic performance as a freshman in college.

When should you take the tests?  We recommend that you take the PLAN (pre-ACT) and the PSAT (pre-SAT) your sophomore year in high school.  During your junior year, you should take both the ACT and SAT twice – once early in the school year and once at the end of the year.  You should also take your SAT Subject tests during your junior year.
